Genesis 38 - Judah - How Far Can You Run From God?

Sometimes we fail God miserably. It isn't long until we are caught in a web of our own sin where it feels impossible to break free. Sometimes we are far from God for years. Will God ever take us back after our miserable failings? As we study the life of Judah—the brother of Joseph, we see how far away from God a person can walk and still be restored by God's grace.

Isn't partial obedience better then no obedience when it comes to obeying God? Isn't close enough good enough? In this chapter we see the consequences of Jacob's partial obedience and how his family suffered when he didn't pay attention to obeying God's Word. In a similar way, giving casual attention to obeying God can lead to unintended disaster in our lives as well.

Leviticus 4:1-5:13 - Sin Offering

Is there any way to avoid the common cold? Doctors tell us there is only one fool-proof way to not get sick. We have to die. Cold viruses are everywhere. There is nothing we can do to avoid them. In the same way, no matter how much we desire to live a holy life, sin is everywhere and we can't avoid it. In this study we learn how they took care of unavoidable sin in the Old Testament and why we are so thankful to Christ for coming and dealing with sin in a completely different way.

Genesis 4+5 - Descent

A 1991 article in the Chicago Tribune told how a Texas mother was so intent on her 13 year old daughter making the cheerleading squad that she hired a hitman to kill the mother of her daughters competition. Detectives discovered she originally planned a double murder of the daughter and the mother but the double murder turned out to be too expensive so she opted for a single murder of the mother for a cheap $2,500. All this to secure her 13 year old daughter's spot on the cheerleading squad. How to people become so evil and cold-hearted? As we continue our way through Genesis we learn how sin slowly takes control of each of our lives and drags us into a descent of increasing levels of wickedness. In 2011, Rob Bell, the senior pastor of Mars Hill Church in Michigan, published a controversial book titled, "
Love Wins: A book about heaven, hell and the fate of every person who ever lived." In it, Robs says, "What if the story of heaven and hell we have been taught is not, in fact, what the bible teaches…. how could it be good news if billions suffer in hell while only a select few go to heaven?" Rob proposes that hell is a type of reform school from which everyone will eventually graduate. Is this true? Psalm 2 - Immediate and Unconditional Surrender

edge

We are told to invite Jesus into our hearts. The decision to invite Jesus into our hearts sounds like deciding on having cream or sugar in our coffee. It is far too self orientated. According to Psalm 2, Jesus doesn't ask for us to invite him in, he commands us to repent of our sin. We must flee to him as the only shield that can protect us from God's white hot wrath. We are commanded to immediately and unconditionally surrender to Christ's rulership in our life or face Christ's terrifying wrath when he returns.

James 4:13-17 - God of my iPhone

In this last message of the third section of James, we learn how pride taints our thinking. We plan our days and our lives with pride, rather than submitting ourselves to God's plans for us. As we refine our skills, we see ourselves as the secret to our success. When it comes to our choices, if nobody will notice, we are quick to cut the corners. Where do these attitudes come from? James tells us these are all subtle ways pride seeps into our think and, unless repented of, shuts of the flow of God's grace into our lives.

As a Christian, our sins are completely forgiven by Christ. The Bible tells us we will not pass into judgment or be condemned. Does this mean it doesn't matter how we live? Will our sins return to haunt us? An ignored topic of the Bible is the doctrine of Eternal Rewards. God promises to reward us for how we live and we can lose reward for the willful sins we commit.
